Going forward tonight they looked really good. Don't understand why Jorge Jesus sticks with Julio Cesar in goal. He's looks really dodgy. Cardoso, Ramires and Di Maria were very good tonight. Missed the last 15 minutes because i was booking my flight back to Portugal for next weeks game! There was a report in an English tabloid about Benfica being interested in Jermaine Beckford from Leeds but it was actually Braga. Aimar is playing really well. If he avoids injury he'll get better and better this season especially with the world cup coming up. I got this story(or similar to this) published in a Portuguese newspaper today! Braga will hope defender Joao Perreira does get a card this weekend or he'll miss the Benfica game...

Looks like I was proved right here! 5-0 against Everton, what a great result.

How good were Benfica and how much of that is down to Pablo Aimar? I used to be a massive fan of him at Valencia and could never understand why the team was not continued to be built around him.

What has always struck me about Portuguese teams is that because they are below the upper echelons of the game and struggle to compete financially they have to innovate and take risks with players.

Players such as Di Maria who the top teams weren't ready to take a gamble on as well as players such as Ramires who are only a matter of time away from the top leagues are a part of the make-up of these teams.

I don't get to see much Portuguese football, but you can often guarantee an attacking style of play attempting to win a game, using their attack as the best form of defence. The Porto team that came to Manchester United last year was such a surprise to them as they were underestimated. If Manchester United had have lost the game at Old Trafford (which they possibly deserved to do) then they would have been at all odds in the second leg.

Thanks for the coverage on this Karl - looks like a great addition to the site.

@Salvador Thank you very much for the comment. Will write another one here after the weekends games.

@Fabricio Now that Braga are out of the Europa league(which was disappointing but not a surprise) and all the other 4 teams at the bottom have heavier schedules in the Champions League and Europa Cup there's every chance Braga can stay there or thereabouts at the top. Sporting have started horrendously and Benfica have yet to meet a tough team. Ramires is doing very well but there are lots of rumours from Barcelona that they are not happy that Kerrison has only played a part in 4 games so far. Benfica have every cance of winning the league if they become consistent. the lack of quality opposition week in week out in the league may damage their Europa League chances. We'll know more on Thursday when they face Everton.

Cheers

Good one Karl really entertaining!
As the second comment I have a few questions regarding Braga chances, do you really think they can keep up after the beggining of the European Leagues? And how about Ramires and Keirrison in Benfica, they seem to be doing quite well no?
Regards!

I'm Portuguese, and this short view on the Portuguese football so far this season is simply phenomenal. Kudos to the writer.
